UTEP’s Churandy Martina - the nation’s fastest man - has been chosen as the Conference USA’s Athlete of the Week for the second-consecutive week. The freshman from Willemstad, Curaçao, had a busy weekend winning two gold and taking one silver at the prestigious Texas Relays.
Martina won the invitational final of the 100-meter dash in the fastest time in the NCAA this season and the second-quickest time in school history (10.04). He beat Florida State’s Walter Dix -- the top ranked athlete in the event coming into the Relays -- by more than a tenth of a second. For his effort, Trackwire.com and Trackshark.com have listed him as the favorite in the event.
Running as the second 200-meter leg, he aided the Miners in breaking a 20-year-old school record in the 1,600-meter sprint medley. UTEP took the crown in 3:16.63.
In addition, Martina anchored the 400-meter relay to a second-place showing. The Miners posted the second-fastest time in the nation, running 39.41.
Martina is entered in the 100 and 200-meter dashes, as well as the 400-meter relay for the UTEP Invitational to be held at Kidd Field on Saturday. (bron UTEP Athletics) |
